Empress Taitou (Taytu Betul, ca. 1851 – February 11, 1918) (baptismal name Wälättä Mikael) was an Empress Consort of the Ethiopian Empire (1889–1913) and wife of Emperor Menelek II of Ethiopia. She was the third of four children in an aristocratic Ethiopian family that was related to the Solomonic dynasty. Her father, Ras Betul Haile Maryam, was less well known than her uncle Dejazmach Wube Haile Maryam, who was the ruler of much of Northern Ethiopia in 1840s, and a rival of Emperor Tewodros II. Ras Imiru Haile Selassie His Highness Ras Imiru was a cousin (his mother Woizero Askale Mariam was the neice of Ras Makonnen) and childhood companion of Emperor Haile Selassie, Ras Imiru was among the princes of the blood most closely associated with the Emperor. He was a very progressive figure on the political scene in the early part of the Emperor's reign and was involved in the drafting of Ethiopia's first constitution in 1931.
