David Clapp, taken at the Snaefellsnes peninsula, Iceland. "At 2am, the intensity of the aurora light suddenly changed & a great burst pulsed across the sky in a totally unexpected formation. The aurora colour is the result of collisions between electrically charged particles from space & oxygen and nitrogen atoms high up in Earth’s atmosphere." Francisco Negroni, Taken at Puyehue National Park in southern Chile, as the Puyehue-Cordón Caulle volcanic complex began erupting. "Volcanic lightning (also known as a dirty thunderstorm) is a rare, short‑lived phenomenon. It is probably caused by static electrical charges resulting from fragments of red‑hot rock, ash and vapour crashing together high in the volcanic plume."
Gravitational waves are the "smoking gun" of the Big Bang. Predicted by Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity in 1916, a massive object like Earth distorts space-time around it like a bowling ball dropped on a trampoline. The larger the object, the more space-time is distorted by it. If a marble were circling around the bowling ball on the dimpled trampoline, it would fall inward, toward the bowling ball, like a rock in space circling a planet.
"A stream of plasma bursts out from the surface of the sun, but since it lacked enough force to break away, most of it fell back into the sun. This eruption was minor and such events occur almost every day on the sun and suggest the kind of dynamic activity being driven by powerful magnetic forces near the sun's surface, according to NASA."
