South Fork Fishing & Hunting Club member Andrew Mellon, among other positions in life, served as United States Secretary of Treasury under presidents Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover. We can thank Andrew Mellon for the appearance of American paper money as we know it today. Before its modern appearance, paper bills were a lot bigger. Mellon came up with the plan for a much smaller paper bill and in doing so, saved the federal government $2 million. ~NMK Andrew Mellon, Flight 93 Memorial, John D Rockefeller, Johnstown Flood, South Fork, Hunt Club, Rich Family, National Gallery Of Art, Hoover

In this photo, taken shortly after the flood, stands the Franklin Street (United) Methodist Church, which did survive the flood. The church building split the flood wave, sparing many of the buildings around Central Park. The church was built of old stone from the state canal system. It did sustain damage from the flood, but still stood in the wake of the disaster. It still stands today, having survived all of Johnstown's major floods. ~NMK United Methodist, Methodist Church, Puyallup Wa, Altoona, Oregon Trail, Church Building

The photo is of the town clock that was housed in the steeple of a Lutheran Church in Johnstown. Despite the destruction, the bells kept ringing to mark each hour, something that was said to have had a powerful effect on all who heard it that horrific night. Conemaugh, was founded in 1800, but had not really grown much by the 1830s. However, Johnstown was appointed to be a key place on the Pennsylvania Canal. In 1828, the Pennsylvania legislature extended the canal's Western Division from Pittsburgh to Johnstown, largely because of the strengh of its river system. In 1832, Johnstown had 500 residents.
