Jews have lived in Tunisia from well before Roman times. Prior to 1948, the Tunisian Jewish population was 110,000. After the re-founding of Israel in 1948, Tunisian Jews faced ongoing antisemitic persecution from the Islamic governments. In 2002, a truck full of explosives was detonated outside La Ghriba synagogue (the site has had a synagogue on it for 1,900 years). 21 people were killed, 30 were wounded. Only 1,500 Jews reside in Tunisia now.

August 2001, a Muslim suicide bomber executed an attack on the Sbarro restaurant, filled with young (Jewish) mothers and babies cooling off on a hot summer's day. The terrorist's explosive belt was rigged with nails.15 people were murdered (8 were children), 130 were wounded. The Muslim woman who disguised herself as a Jew to escort the terrorist into the restaurant was arrested, but expressed no regret: "I dedicated myself to Jihad for Allah...I would do it again today."
