Jews have lived in Tunisia from well before Roman times. Prior to 1948, the Tunisian Jewish population was 110,000. After the re-founding of Israel in 1948, Tunisian Jews faced ongoing antisemitic persecution from the Islamic governments. In 2002, a truck full of explosives was detonated outside La Ghriba synagogue (the site has had a synagogue on it for 1,900 years). 21 people were killed, 30 were wounded. Only 1,500 Jews reside in Tunisia now.
