"Woman's Mission: Companion of Manhood", 1863 by George Elgar Hicks (1824-1914). The sentiments of this painting are,of course, entirely out of date, but, even in his grief this gentleman still looks smart in his day suit. Buttoning the jacket with only the top button was the fashionable and practicle way to wear these long jackets at this period - note his red and green leather slippers. The Victorians loved to tell a story in their paintings, the more sentimental the better.
