Hooke published Micrographia in 1655, which contains detailed illustrations of objects under the microscope, like the crystalline structure of snowflakes and insects. Here he used the term "cell" to describe the pores he saw in cork tissue under his compound microscope. This led to his discovery of plant cells because he was able to see the cell walls in cork.
