One of the high school teachers in our district did something similar. The kids painted watercolor in colors they saw in their selected bird. Then they tore the paper into scraps and added the scraps to recreate a 3-D sculpture of a bird. He also had them do self-portraits on maps similar to this image of the bird. Both great projects.
