Because I was the officer that picked up outgoing mail on the row that night, Ted assumed that I was the one that intercepted the letter. I did see (and read) the letter, and I recall him even asking to see the letter again before all the mail was turned in to be sent out of the prison, but he did not want me to return the letter to him. In August 1975 police attempted to stop Ted Bundy for a driving violation. He aroused suspicion when he tried to get away by turning his car lights off and speeding through stop signs. When he was finally stopped his VW was searched and police found handcuffs, an ice pick, crowbar, pantyhose with eye holes cut out along with other questionable items.
Below is an FBI inventory from a February 13, 1978, search of one of the cars Ted Bundy stole and drove around in. The items listed are the typical stuff you’d find in a messy car: snack wrappers, cigarettes and the like. Bundy abandoned this Ford Station wagon and stole a Volkswagen Beetle, in which he was arrested two days later.
