Balconies of Time # 1 | istanbul travelogue

I cannot imagine living in a flat without a balcony. A balcony overlooking the blue Bosphorus if we dare to dream big. Here is a sample of balconies and bay windows in various architectural styles I have archived over the years. Here and there in every neighborhood, depending on its history and fabric, you will come across such handsome balconies, which remind us of a bygone era. You need to torture your feet though, I am warning you, in order to dig them out. Storm through the streets of…

Camondo Stairs of Galata | istanbul travelogue

When Henri-Cartier Bresson photographed the Camondo steps of Galata it was 1965 -a century after it was commissioned by the banker Camondo family. His photo is, unfortunately, not one of his iconic and flattering stair photos. Still, it occupies a special place in the heart of Istanbullites; rarely would you find it empty to make a picture of yourself here. After half a century of dilapidation and neglect, the revamp going on the area gives the stairs a breath of life it well deserves. How…

THE Post Office | istanbul travelogue

If you are on your way from Sirkeci to Eminönü, you cannot miss the monumental post office sticking out in the crooked back streets of the old town. Do not hesitate to walk up the stairs in the front, which will directly take you to the inviting main office. The light was adorable; and believe me, the interplay of light and dark has nothing to do with my poor old camera. If you want to sneak upstairs, make sure you hide your camera and find a good excuse! NATIONALISM & IDENTITY CRISISThe…

Windows of Time # 1 | istanbul travelogue

If you are aiming for photographing windows in Istanbul, I assure you will not fall short of picturesque windows if you go off the beaten track... Though I have never been fond of romanticizing poverty, the window tilts lined with pots of geranium take me back down the memory lane. The traditional way of life is still very alive in these neighborhoods; children play in the streets, women spend time outside chatting with neighbors, there seems to be no restaurants or cafes around fro the…

Urban Transformation Projects #2 | istanbul travelogue

In the name of regeneration, the old historic neighborhood of Istanbul, Tarlabaşı, will be confined to the memories of Istanbullites very soon. It used to be inhabited mostly by the Greeks since the mid 1800s and by migrants from Anatolia since the 1960s. Despite opposition from many different interest groups, the demolitions are dazing the district to the ground to give room for high-end projects. The transformation taking place in the city is sometimes beyond my imagination. My mind does…

Adios 2013! | istanbul travelogue

Whenever I set my foot outside in the past 2 weeks, I felt i got swept away by the wild waves of people, especially in my neighborhood, Nişantaşı, a byword for urban chic. I ran out of all of the shortcuts to my house. For the fear of being labeled a snob, I even refrained from being critical and complaining about the crowds gathering in to see the dazzling new year's decorations in Nişantaşı, on Bağdat Avenue, and in many shopping malls scattered around the city. I almost concluded this has…

The Rainbow Revolution | istanbul travelogue

One day when I was on my way to the Spice Bazaar in the dolmus, colorful stairs on the right side of the road caught my attention leaving a huge smile on my face. After a moment of awe, I was asking myself if this is the city I have been trying to escape for years. I did not have the slightest idea what it was all about. Googling revealed the story of a pensioner, who wanted to cheer up the neighborhood by painting them in colors. The next day...The next day, when I woke up only to learn that…

Sirkeci Terminal | istanbul travelogue

Here are some detailed photos from the Sirkeci terminal, where we once got on board the train for an Interrail trip across Europe, when we were 20 years old. The terminal station designed by the German architect, August Jasmund (1889-90) was the last stop of the famous Orient Express. I find it to be a beautiful example of Art Nouveau style with an Oriental twist in the city. It is currently closed to the public due to ongoing restoration. PS. Photo #2 featured in my photo exhibition…
