One of the longest living types of trees, oaks can survive upwards of a millennium. With over 600 different species, all varieties have enormous trunks, branches, showy bark, and acorns with cup-like caps. Since they mature into large trees with extremely wide canopies they are best suited for homes with large yards.

A Japanese maple in Oregon. Swedish doctor-botanist Carl Thunberg traveled to Japan in the 18th century and named this maple "palmatum" after the hand-like shape of its leaf. Gardeners all over the world grow the Japanese maple for its leaves' shapes, colors and fine texture. Oak trees are big hardwood trees with a wide spread. Tree Trunk Drawing, Oak Tree Drawings, Oak Trees Landscaping, Landscape Trees, White Oak Tree, Oak Tree Tattoo, Baumgarten, Tree Furniture, Old Trees

Identifying oak trees can be difficult given that there are over 600 varieties and many look very similar, even in the same geographic area. Leaf shape can be useful in identifying whether you are looking at a red or white oak and can also be used with the tree's location to identify the species.
