Colonel Baron Takeichi Nishi. Olympic Gold Medalist and defender of Iwo Jima. He remains Japan's only Olympic medal to date in an equestrian event (1932 Olympics, Los Angeles). He was popular among Japanese Americans, who were ostracized by American society in the 1930s. During his stay in Los Angeles, Nishi became the topic of conversation both for his love of driving convertibles around town and for becoming part of the social circle led by movie stars Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks. Anyone not know Snowman's story? An Amish country, PA, plowhorse was on a van to the slaughterhouse after failing to sell at a cheap horse auction. Harry de Leyer, there to pick up a hack for student lessons, arrived late; missing the sale. Noticing the 8 year old gray, Harry bought him for $80. Snowman was a lesson horse until Harry saw he could jump and started training. Two years from a plow - and death - Snowman was in Madison Square Garden and won the 1958 open show jumping Triple Crown. Animals Beautiful, Zebras
