This easy-to-make dish comes from Depression cooking, where a little meat could be stretched to feed & fill up a lot of people, and from the United States military, for the same reason. As a Navy Brat born to Depression Era parents, it's a given that this dish would be on our table! If you prefer the Chipped Beef version, cut the dry beef into small pieces. Make a roux from butter, flour, and milk, then add the chipped beef pieces after it thickens.
Chipped Beef on Toast Recipe - Food.com
My mom made this when I was growing up. It's a very simple dish, filling and easy to make. It's good over toast, or for something more healthy, serve over steamed green beans.
Dad's Hamburger Gravy
This is one of my favorite 'cheap meal' recipes that I learned from my Southern cookin' Dad. Creamy hamburger gravy with just the right blend of spices is perfect served over homemade biscuits, mashed potatoes, rice, fried potatoes.. just about anything!
Creamed Chipped Beef On Toast
My mom used to make this recipe. It can also be made with 3/4 pound browned, drained hamburger. We called it SOS: Same Ole Stuff. Great comfort food! Either recipe is easy to make and tastes great with a cold beer. Serve over toast.
