Replica of an ancient Chinese oracle bone dating to Shang Dynasty king Wu Ding, latter part of 2nd millennium BC. The characters, known as 'shell-bone script,' were carved on the bones in order to frame a question. The bones were then heated over a fire and the resulting cracks were interpreted as being the answer.
