I believe healthy snacks should be available for students during independent work. These can be funded by classroom sponsors or parents or sometimes even the district. Growing students need snacks, expecially those who experience food insecurities. Because of this the snacks should not be used as reward or punishment but rather be used to keep students brains energized. A hangry students results in a misbehaving student. In kindergarten this would need pictures to help studetnts understand the meanings of words. A calming corner should also look and feel safe just like this one! The boats set clear boundaries for students to remain within while creating a cozy space and minimal distractions. All teachers are familier with the feeling of needing a bit of peace in the classroom. Book boats might be an alternative to the "heads down, voices off" stratagy.
