Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester, was Elizabeth's firm favourite. She would refer to him as her 'Bonny Sweet Robin' and rumor and speculation was rife about the exact nature of their relationship. His first wife, Amy Robsart died in mysterious circumstances and the taint of suspicion stuck itself to Dudley. When he married Lettice Knollys in secret, Queen Elizabeth was furios, banishing them both from court. His last letter was to Elizabeth.
Elizabeth I's Map
The map is part of an atlas known as the Queen Mary Atlas. Mary commissioned the atlas in 1558 from the Portuguese mapmaker Diego Homen. It was probably intended as a gift for Mary’s Catholic husband, King Philip II of Spain. Mary died before the atlas was finished, and after her death, the atlas was presented to Elizabeth I, Mary’s successor to the English throne.
'THE DISCOVERY OF THE SPANISH ARMADA OPPOSITE THE LIZARD' | 'In July 1588, the Spanish Armada under the Duke of Parma intended to overthrow Protestant England. 'Delayed by bad weather, four galleys and one of the galleons had to leave the fleet - these ships were spotted when they appeared off The Lizard in Cornwall. Once sighted, the news was conveyed to London by a system of beacons that had been built along the south coast.' ✫ღ⊰n
