Francis of Assisi
Like the later St Joan, St Francis of Assisi (1181 – 1226) was never ordained, not part of a church order (until they made one for him). Like Gautama, Francis came from a privileged family but gave it all up for a greater reality. In a civilisation that sees nature as resource to be exploited, he saw creation as his sisters and brothers. Church clerics thought he might be a heretic for he dared to take the gospels literally, not in dogma but in action.
